The Winnipeg Goldeyes are embracing a modern, fan-centered approach to make their games more engaging for younger audiences. Today, attending a baseball game isn’t just about the sport; it’s about creating memorable social moments. The Goldeyes’ patio experience is designed with that in mind, offering fans an open, lively space to connect, enjoy drinks, and experience the game on their terms. But these patios aren’t just for ambiance—they’re an intentional modernization move that aligns with how a younger crowd enjoys events.

Patios designed for a new kind of fan

The growing preference for open, social spaces has been especially noticeable over the past several years. As Melissa Schlichting, Food & Beverage Manager of the Winnipeg Goldeyes shafred, “Most people, to be honest, aren’t huge baseball fans. And that’s okay. We’re selling an affordable, family-friendly experience where you’re going to have a great time.” This focus on experience over the sport itself has led the Goldeyes to create patios that feel more like a gathering place than just seats in a stadium.

These patios allow fans to move around, mingle, and enjoy the game from unique vantage points. Ideal for casual visitors and social events, they’re open for anyone to enjoy during the game. “If the patios aren’t rented out, anyone is free to go there,” Melissa explained. “You don’t need a special ticket; you can hang out there for an inning or the whole game.” This flexibility is central to making the game experience welcoming to a broader, younger audience.

Digital ordering for instant satisfaction

The Goldeyes have also integrated digital ordering to simplify the experience for fans in patio spaces. For younger fans who value speed and convenience, QR codes on tables and railings offer a quick way to order. “You scan the QR code, and when you’re checking out, you tell us where you are—like left-field patio upper, table four. Then we know exactly where to deliver it,” Melissa said.

This simple system means fans don’t have to leave their spots or miss out on the game, which has resonated particularly well with younger attendees. By speeding up the order process, the Goldeyes can serve more fans in less time, effectively increasing sales within the limited game window.

Rethinking the experience for a younger crowd

The blend of patios and digital ordering is key to attracting a new generation of fans. Many younger attendees are more interested in the social aspect than sitting through the full game. The digital tools fit naturally with the fast-paced, digital-first world they’re used to, making the Goldeyes’ games more appealing and relevant.

A Deloitte study found that 43% of Gen Z fans use their mobile devices to post to social media during live sporting events. This trend highlights the need for a fan experience that’s both shareable and seamlessly digital, enabling fans to stay connected and enjoy the game in a way that feels natural to them.

Melissa highlighted this approach: “We wanted to cater to those demographics that come out to have fun, hang out, and enjoy the night. They want a good experience and don’t necessarily want to be tied to a seat the whole time.” By prioritizing ease, flexibility, and convenience, the Goldeyes ensure they’re offering a modern experience that resonates with younger fans.

Conclusion: redefining game day with a modern approach

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have recognized that today’s fan values a lively, flexible environment over a traditional game-day experience. By introducing digital ordering on patios, they’ve created an appealing setup that aligns with how younger audiences prefer to enjoy live events. The Goldeyes’ approach shows that by adapting to modern tastes and expectations, even a baseball game can become a must-attend social event for a new generation.
